![]() ![]() Then in Friend Ship we hear Pearl talk about herself in the same belittling way, explaining how inferior she feels with a defeated “I’m just a pearl.” ![]() ![]() But Pearl’s description remains a tantalizing mystery until Back to the Barn.įor one thing, calling Pearl “a” pearl is our first indication that Gems aren’t unique, and calling her “defective” hints at a power dynamic where pearls are pretty low on the totem pole. Our newest recruit sees them as a shameless display, a puny overcooked runt, and a lost defective pearl. We have a pretty good sense of what Jasper was talking about in terms of the first two: we know Amethyst emerged late and is small, and what Homeworld thinks of Garnet as a permanent fusion. Steven reps the Cluster as a planet-busting giant green snake with swirly red eyes.Peridot’s one-on-one episodes with Pearl, Amethyst, and Garnet reflect Jasper’s initial take on the three heroes. With the fighting bit and how Peridot expected to be praised and deferred to after “winning”, I wonder if that’s a common part of Homeworld life? Like, Hierarchy being established and expressed through personal violence I can beat you up, so I’m in charge(”we should have done this from the beginning” might be some telling phraseology).Peridot’s vision of ultimate power is smol ovo.Peridot: ”What are these…Robuts you speak of?” YES!! ROBUT!!!! I am Pleased uvu Also You Peridot You are a Robut uvu uvu.“giant robots aren’t for fighting!” hehehehe. Are those some of Sadie’s ancestors in that picture in the barn? That aeronatrix has a very Sadie looking head u_u.Could be part of why folks are so blase about Gem stuff given this, the temples, and the destruction of Florida I’d say it seems pretty likely the Gem War(s?) have had a huge impact on human history. “1000 Year war” 0_0 WOW, ok yeah no way humanity wasn’t aware of that somehow.Plus, maybe more evidence for the theory that Gems are a sort of Created Intelligence initially built by another species? Robo-Apocalypse Gems A++ uwu Given that Gems are used to power tech, and that this seems to be a pretty onerous experience given Lapis’s response to it, I suppose this isn’t too surprising. Peridot arguing that Pearl should take her more seriously since she’s a “certified kindergartner” :| A funny joke, but also Gems don’t distinguish between themselves and their technology the same technicians that maintain, build, and interface with Gem-tech also run their creche-centers.That makes Pearl’s knowhow and knowitallism an achievement and rebellion in and of itself(and, totally unrelatedly, shows how Garnet’s line about Earth being where she can “be herself” from the extended opening applies just as well to Pearl in its own way), and maybe even a bigger one that the ability to fight she chooses to prioritize she fights for Rose Quartz as an expression of her loyalty and service in the(mostly mythical) traditions of knighthood, but servitude and ownership/loyalty seems to be what defines Pearls on Homeworld(and their exclusivity given Peridot’s comment about how caste-inappropriate it’d be for her to “own” one), whereas Peridot IDs Pearl’s tech knowledge and skill as the truly transgressive thing about her(though maybe that’s just because Peridot is a technician herself?) Ok, so Pearl’s are body-servants! Given the holoprojection and her technical skill I thought they might be technicians of some kind, but the intro of Peridots made that a bit awkward(why would built lifeforms living in a caste-society choose to create two castes of technicians?). ![]()
